Over 134,000 Displaced in Northeast Syria: IOM Report

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that over 134,000 people have been displaced in northeast Syria following clashes between the de facto government army and Kurdish forces. The number of internally displaced persons in the Hasaka province has risen sharply in the last three days, from 5,725 to 134,803. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have withdrawn to Hasaka after conflicts in Aleppo, Raqqa, and Deir ez-Zur. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad announced a four-day ceasefire with the Kurds, aiming for a “peaceful integration” of the Kurdish-majority province into the state. The IOM reports that the displacement is driven by fears of further clashes, particularly near prisons and headquarters of Kurdish forces. Over 41,000 people have sought refuge in reception centers and urgently need food, mattresses, and blankets. Kobani previously stood as a symbol of resistance against the Islamic State (IS).
