Law Proposals Approved to Ease Financial Reporting for Small Businesses in Cyprus

The Cypriot Parliament has unanimously approved two law proposals aimed at simplifying financial reporting for small businesses. The amendments to the Companies Law allow small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to prepare their financial statements based on the Financial Reporting Standards for SMEs, reducing the administrative burden associated with compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards. Furthermore, the turnover threshold for companies required to undergo audit by a certified auditor is increased from €400,000 to €300,000. This means that more small companies will be exempt from the audit requirement, further reducing costs and bureaucracy. The need for these changes arose from the recognition that small businesses face difficulties in complying with high regulatory requirements due to their limited resources. Strict adherence to International Financial Reporting Standards can be expensive and disproportionate for these enterprises. The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus (ICPAC) is designated as the competent authority for determining the Financial Reporting Standards that will apply to small businesses, while the Minister of Finance will be responsible for approving these standards. These changes are expected to contribute to the streamlining of small businesses and enhancing their competitiveness.
