Feast Day of January 21st: Rare Names Celebrated Today

Today, January 21st, the Church honors the memory of Saint Maximus the Confessor, Saint Agnes, Saint Eugene of Trebizond, Saint Neophytus the Martyr, and Saint Patroclus. The names celebrated today are Agnes, Agnoula, Eugene, Evgenis, Maximus, Maximi, Maxima, Neophytos, Neophytia, Neophytis, Patroklos, Patrokleios, Patrokleas, Patroklis, Patrokleia, Patrokla, Patra and Patroula. Saint Agnes was born in Rome to noble parents and dedicated her life to spreading Christianity. She was denounced by a certain ruler and, refusing to renounce her faith, endured terrible tortures, including being thrown into a brothel and into the fire. During her torture, Saint Agnes caused an earthquake in the brothel, which led to her removal from there. Despite the ruler's attempts to break her, Saint Agnes remained steadfast in her faith and was eventually martyred in the fire. After her martyrdom, Christians found and buried her relics with great honor, glorifying God for the strength and faith of Saint Agnes. Her memory is honored to this day by the Church.
