May 28th: Celebration of Saint Dioscorides

Today, Wednesday, May 28th, the Church honors the memory of Saint Dioscorides. According to the calendar of saints, Saints Crescens, Paul, and Dioscorides martyred in 244 AD during the reign of Gordian III. These saints, preaching the word of God in Rome, converted many pagans to Christianity. They were arrested and thrown into prison, where they continued their work, leading others to the faith. Eventually, they were sentenced to death and thrown into a fiery furnace, where they received the immortal crown of martyrdom. Their faith was so strong that it led to the destruction of idols and the belief of many people. Today, those who bear the name Dioscorides celebrate their name day.
