Potato Farmers Seek Subsidy for 2025 Damages

Potato farmers in Cyprus are requesting a subsidy from the government to compensate for the damages they suffered in 2025 due to extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, frost, and drought. They are also requesting the provision of water for irrigation during the night, when frost conditions prevail, in order to protect their crops. The President of the Association of Organized Potato Producers, Andreas Karyos, stated that the Ministry of Agriculture is unable to provide water due to the general shortage. He emphasized the need for government support, as the increased production costs due to weather conditions threaten the viability of potato farming. According to Mr. Karyos, the Minister of Agriculture has announced a 30% reduction in water supply for greenhouses and tree crops, while open crops, including potatoes, will not receive any water at all. 2025 was a particularly difficult year for potato farmers, with costs increasing significantly. Despite the satisfactory price of potatoes for consumers, producers are struggling to cover their expenses. They are asking the government to cover lost income and increased production costs.
