Cyprus: Transport Ministry Proposes Law to Tackle Traffic Chaos

The Cypriot Parliamentary Committee on Transport has begun discussions on a new bill aimed at addressing traffic congestion. The proposal, submitted by MP Fotini Tsiridou, aims to create an “umbrella” law covering various aspects of citizens’ daily lives, with a focus on traffic flow. The bill includes the establishment of traffic management centers in each province, authorization for the towing of vehicles obstructing traffic, the introduction of priority lanes, flow zones with parking restrictions, school protection zones, and staggered working hours. It also provides for the integration of teleworking into the framework of decongesting roads and the provision of open traffic data. Ms. Tsiridou described the traffic problem as a “plague” that plagues citizens and emphasized that the proposal aims to introduce order and rules. All stakeholders have expressed their views on the issue, and written submissions are also expected. The goal is to create a comprehensive law that addresses the traffic problem in Cyprus in a coordinated and effective manner, improving the daily lives of citizens.
