Escalation in Relations is Against Everyone, Says President Christodoulides in Brussels

President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, stated in Brussels, upon his arrival at the informal European Council, that escalation in international relations is detrimental to all, including the European Union and the United States. He emphasized the importance of de-escalation and maintaining transatlantic relations. President Christodoulides mentioned that the Republic of Cyprus fully respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark, underlining that Cyprus knows better than any other member state the consequences of violating these principles. He expressed his expectation to be informed about the developments in the understanding reached in Davos and to decide on the next steps. Reiterating that Cyprus does not seek escalation, President Christodoulides stressed that this does not mean compromising on territorial sovereignty and integrity, principles fundamental to international law. He also underlined the need for greater autonomy of the European Union in areas such as defense, security and energy. Responding to a question about security guarantees for Ukraine, the President replied that the issue would be discussed, given the latest developments. Answering a question about whether EU-US relations have been irreparably damaged, the President expressed his belief that this path should not be followed, reiterating his commitment to finding a positive way forward.
