Machado Offers Trump the Nobel Peace Prize

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado met with Donald Trump at the White House, where she presented him with the Nobel Peace Prize she received in December. This gesture, which took place during a private dinner without the presence of journalists, sparked significant discussion and reactions internationally. Trump, through a social media post, expressed his honor at the meeting and thanked Machado for the "wonderful gesture of mutual respect". Machado, explaining the symbolism of her act, referred to Simón Bolívar and the gift he received from the Marquis de Lafayette 200 years ago – a medal featuring the image of George Washington. She argued that offering the Nobel Peace Prize to Trump represents recognition of his commitment to the freedom of Venezuela, echoing a historical gesture from the people of Bolívar to the heir of Washington. However, this move raises institutional issues, as the Norwegian Nobel Committee has made it clear that the Nobel Peace Prize cannot be donated or transferred. Despite the committee's official stance, Machado appears to insist on the symbolic nature of the offering, considering it an expression of gratitude and solidarity. The meeting and the presentation of the award have provoked varied reactions, with some criticizing the move as inappropriate and a violation of Nobel rules, while others support it as a sign of recognition for Trump's efforts to promote peace and freedom. Συνάντηση με έντονο συμβολισμό πραγματοποιήθηκε την Πέμπτη στον Λευκό Οίκο, όπου η ηγέτιδα της αντιπολίτευσης στη Βενεζουέλα, Μαρία Κορίνα Ματσάδο, προσέφερε στον Ντόναλντ Τραμπ το Νόμπελ Ειρήνης που της απονεμήθηκε τον Δεκέμβριο, κίνηση που προκάλεσε διεθνή συζήτηση και αντιδράσεις.
Σε ανάρτησή του στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης, ο Αμερικανός πρόεδρος έγραψε:
«Ήταν μεγάλη μου τιμή να συναντήσω σήμερα τη Μαρία Κορίνα Ματσάδο από τη Βενεζουέλα. Είναι μια υπέροχη γυναίκα που έχει περάσει πάρα πολλά. Η Μαρία μού προσέφερε το Νόμπελ Ειρήνης της για το έργο που έχω κάνει. Μια τόσο υπέροχη χειρονομία αμοιβαίου σεβασμού. Σε ευχαριστώ, Μαρία!»
Η ίδια η Ματσάδο επιβεβαίωσε το γεγονός, δηλώνοντας ότι κατά τη συνάντηση και το γεύμα που είχε με τον Τραμπ στον Λευκό Οίκο –χωρίς την παρουσία δημοσιογράφων– του παρέδωσε το μετάλλιο του Νόμπελ Ειρήνης.

«Παρέδωσα στον πρόεδρο των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών το μετάλλιο, το Νόμπελ Ειρήνης», είπε χαρακτηριστικά, συνδέοντας την κίνησή της με ένα ιστορικό παράδειγμα από τη Λατινική Αμερική.
Όπως εξήγησε, αναφέρθηκε στον Σιμόν Μπολίβαρ και στο γεγονός ότι πριν από διακόσια χρόνια ο μαρκήσιος ντε Λαφαγιέτ του είχε δωρίσει μετάλλιο με το πρόσωπο του Τζορτζ Ουάσινγκτον, το οποίο ο Μπολίβαρ κράτησε σε όλη του τη ζωή.
«Διακόσια χρόνια μετά, ο λαός του Μπολίβαρ επιστρέφει στον κληρονόμο του Ουάσινγκτον ένα μετάλλιο – σε αυτή την περίπτωση το Νόμπελ Ειρήνης – ως αναγνώριση της μοναδικής του δέσμευσης για την ελευθερία μας», ανέφερε.

Υπενθυμίζεται ότι η Νορβηγική Επιτροπή Νόμπελ έχει καταστήσει σαφές πως το βραβείο Νόμπελ Ειρήνης δεν δωρίζεται ούτε μεταβιβάζεται, γεγονός που δημιουργεί θεσμικό ζήτημα γύρω από τον συμβολισμό της κίνησης.
