Total Solar Eclipse in Europe After 27 Years and Other Astronomical Events for 2026

After more than 25 years, a total solar eclipse will return to continental Europe on August 2, 2026, with Spain at its epicenter. The eclipse will begin its journey in northern Russia, cross the Arctic Ocean and eastern Greenland, reach its maximum off the coast of Iceland, and finally arrive in northern Spain, where the Moon will completely cover the Sun for approximately 1 minute and 50 seconds. In other parts of Europe, including some northwestern regions of Greece (Corfu, Igoumenitsa, etc.), it will be visible as a partial eclipse, but at a very small percentage. This eclipse is significant for scientists, as it will give them the opportunity to study the Sun's corona. Professional and amateur astronomers from Greece are already organizing trips to Spain to observe the phenomenon. Additionally, an annular solar eclipse is expected on February 17, 2026, which will be visible only in Antarctica.
