Nearly 30,000 Animals Culled Due to Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak

The number of animals culled due to the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Cyprus has reached 29,731, according to the Veterinary Services. 49 herds have been infected, 46 in Larnaca and 3 in Nicosia, with 28,019 sheep and goats and 1,712 cattle already culled. An additional 240 sheep and goats and 150 cattle are expected to be culled on Saturday. The infection rate in sheep and goat units is 1.79% and in animal population 5.7%, while for cattle the corresponding rates are 1.87% and 2.2%. Vaccination is complete in 98% of cattle and 75% of sheep and goats, while the second dose has been administered to 30% of cattle and 10% of sheep and goats. The Veterinary Services continue sampling and investigations.
