Former President of the Republic of Cyprus, George Vassiliou, passed away last night at the age of 94. Mr. Vassiliou, who served as the third President of Cyprus (1988-1993), was rushed to Nicosia General Hospital on January 6th, where his condition was deemed serious. His wife, Androulla Vassiliou, announced his death via a post on X, expressing her deep sorrow. George Vassiliou was born in Famagusta in 1931 and studied economics at universities in Europe. He held a doctorate and worked as an economist and market researcher, founding the Middle East Research Center (MERC). He also served as Vice President of the Nicosia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a member of various committees and councils, and collaborated with the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation. His contribution to the economic and cultural sector of Cyprus was significant. The death of George Vassiliou has caused grief in Cyprus, with citizens and politicians expressing their condolences.
