Police Crackdown on Illegal Fireworks Ahead of Easter

The Cyprus Police continue their campaign to prevent and combat the use of firecrackers and 'lambatziés' (traditional Easter bonfires), which began two months ago. So far in 2026, 11,000 items of pyrotechnics have been confiscated, mainly firecrackers, while 20,500 were confiscated in 2025. Police warn of the dangers associated with their use, as serious injuries and deaths have occurred in the past. The campaign includes public awareness campaigns, lectures in schools, and increased patrols. The majority of firecrackers originate from Turkey through occupied territories, while some are legally imported from Spain and Poland. Authorities emphasize the need for increased vigilance, especially during Holy Week.
