Philippine Journalist Convicted of 'Terror Funding' in Controversial Trial

A Philippine journalist, Frencie Mae Cubio, has been convicted of 'terror funding', a decision that has drawn strong criticism from press freedom and human rights organizations. Cubio, who has already been detained for six years, and her former roommate, Mariel Domiquil, were found guilty and sentenced to at least 12 years and 5 months in prison, with a maximum of 18 years and 8 months. They were initially arrested for illegal possession of firearms but were acquitted of that charge. The conviction for terror funding, which carries a sentence of up to 40 years, is widely seen as retaliation for her journalistic work. Organizations such as the Clooney Foundation for Justice and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) have condemned the verdict, while the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression described the process as a 'travesty of justice'.
