Following a complaint regarding the misuse of EU funds, the expenses of Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Fidias Panagiotou are under investigation by the European Public Prosecutor's Office. MP Alexandra Attalidou provides details on the salary and allowances received by MEPs. The basic salary amounts to €11,255, which after tax and insurance deductions becomes €8,772. In addition, MEPs receive €350 per day of attendance at the Parliament for accommodation and expenses, as well as full coverage of travel costs. A significant package of €30,769 per month is allocated to their associates, with 40% (€12,300) covering accredited associates in Brussels and the remainder for local assistants. Hiring companies is permitted with a monthly cost of up to €18,461 and an additional €6,153 for other services. However, strict rules apply: funding for parties, personal use of funds, and hiring relatives are prohibited. Legal expert Simos Angelidis explains that the European Public Prosecutor's Office examines hundreds of complaints daily, and only those with substance are investigated. If it is deemed that there is a case, the process of lifting the MEP's immunity will begin, as has happened in the past with another Cypriot MEP. Mr. Angelidis emphasizes that the Prosecutor's Office does not comment on cases under investigation unless there is serious evidence. Anyone under investigation has the right to comment and respond to the evidence presented to them, within the framework of a fair trial.
