New Chapter in EU-Syria Relations: €620 Million Support Package for 2026-2027

The European Union and Syria have opened a new chapter in their relationship with the recent visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa to Damascus. The EU has committed to a funding package of approximately €620 million for the years 2026-2027, which will be directed towards humanitarian aid, early recovery, and bilateral support. The new cooperation is based on three pillars: the creation of a new political partnership, strengthening trade, and economic support. Von der Leyen emphasized the hope for a new Syria after years of violence, while Costa reaffirmed the EU's steadfast support for Syria's democratic transition and territorial integrity. Both officials acknowledged the need for further reforms and the restoration of trust in institutions.
