South Korea: Former Prime Minister Sentenced to 23 Years for Martial Law Declaration

A South Korean court sentenced former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo to 23 years in prison for his role in declaring martial law in December 2024 under the previous government of Yoon Suk-yeol. Han, 76, is the first former government official to be convicted on charges directly related to the imposition of martial law. The court described his actions as an "uprising from above." During the proceedings, it was revealed that Han had discussed plans to suspend the operation of important institutions, such as the parliament. The sentence handed down was harsher than the initial 15-year prosecution request. Han has been taken into custody and is expected to appeal the decision.
