US Envoy Calls for Restraint in Aleppo

US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack stated that recent clashes between Kurdish and government forces in Aleppo are “deeply concerning” and jeopardize the March 2025 integration agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Damascus government. “We urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, immediately cease hostilities, and return to dialogue,” Barrack said following a meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Saraa and Foreign Minister Assad al-Shaibani. The call for de-escalation comes amid fears that the fighting could undermine efforts to achieve a political settlement in Syria. Barrack added that the team of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is ready to facilitate cooperation between the two sides to advance the integration process. This indicates a continued US commitment to the political process in Syria, despite the challenges. The US is keen to see the integration agreement implemented, believing it could contribute to the stabilization of Syria and the resolution of long-standing political and military differences.
