Cyprus Mourns Former President George Vasiliou

The body of George Vasiliou, the third President of the Republic of Cyprus, is lying in state at the Holy Church of Saint Sophia. The funeral service and burial with honors as a former head of state will take place tomorrow, Saturday, which has been declared a national holiday. People of all ages are visiting the church to pay their respects. Averof Moritsis, Vasiliou's driver for 26 years, emotionally stated that the late President was like a second father to him. He described Vasiliou as a gentleman, with integrity and modesty, who always cared for those around him. Mr. Moritsis mentioned that the most powerful moment for Vasiliou was the decision to support Glaucos Clerides in the Presidential elections. He recounted a conversation they had, where Vasiliou prioritized the national interest over party interests. He also referred to a time when Vasiliou had expressed his desire to return the Kokkina enclaves to Cyprus as a gesture of goodwill. Mr. Moritsis expressed his belief that if Vasiliou had been re-elected in 1993, he would have resolved the Cyprus issue. He emphasized that Vasiliou's greatest concern was the solution of the Cyprus problem and that he had the ability and determination to achieve it.
