Zohran Mamdani Sworn In as New York City Mayor in Historic Subway Ceremony

Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as the mayor of New York City in a historic ceremony held at a Manhattan subway station. Mamdani, the city's first Muslim mayor, took his oath on the Quran, holding a copy that belonged to African American historian and activist Arturo Schomburg. During a brief speech, he spoke of the city's beauty and its ability to improve the lives of working people. The official inauguration ceremony will take place on the steps of City Hall, presided over by Bernie Sanders, with approximately 4,000 guests and tens of thousands of viewers expected to attend via screens set up along major streets. Mamdani has also appointed Ramzi Kassem, a lawyer who previously defended suspects in the 9/11 attacks, as the city's chief legal counsel.
