US Congress Greenlights Bill Promoting Eastern Mediterranean's Role in IMEC Corridor

The US House of Representatives' Foreign Affairs Committee has passed a bill promoting the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), aiming to establish the Eastern Mediterranean as a strategic gateway to the corridor. The bill, titled “Eastern Mediterranean Gateway Act,” seeks to strengthen US cooperation with key regional countries, including India, Greece, Cyprus, Israel, and Egypt, and connect their critical infrastructure to the IMEC axis. The legislation focuses on energy projects of strategic importance, such as the “Great Sea Interconnector,” the Greece-Egypt electricity interconnector (GREGY), the Greece-Bulgaria gas pipeline, and new LNG terminals. These projects are considered crucial for Europe's energy security and the functionality of the IMEC. The bill's text calls on the US Secretary of State to prioritize the Eastern Mediterranean in US foreign policy, support existing cooperation frameworks (such as the 3+1), and strengthen the role of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum. It also promotes regional convergence through enhanced diplomatic and economic ties, including the Abraham Accords. Due to the midterm elections in 2026, it is expected that the bill will be incorporated as an amendment into bills related to the general government and Pentagon budgets. The bill also provides for the submission of annual reports to Congress on the implementation of the law and the progress of energy and defense projects.
