Cyprus Warned of Potential Hybrid Warfare Due to EU Presidency – “More Videos May Emerge”

Cyprus has been warned about potential hybrid attacks in light of its assumption of the EU Council Presidency, stated Deputy Government Spokesperson Yannis Antonious. This warning comes from the Information Office of the European Commission and concerns possible disinformation and malicious manipulation of audiovisual material. At the same time, Mr. Antonious called on political parties to be cautious with comments regarding the leaked video containing conversations of President Christodoulides' associates, as further similar incidents may occur with the aim of misleading the public. The government is awaiting the results of the police investigation to determine the authenticity of the video, as there is strong evidence that it has been maliciously edited. It is noted that the video raises suspicions of illegal funding. The warning about hybrid attacks has already been recorded in decisions of the European Council and on dedicated websites dealing with the issue. Giorgos Lakkotrypis has already submitted information regarding the shell company and the "fake" investors. Security Services believe the video constitutes a hybrid threat of Russian origin. The government insists on the need for caution and prudence in dealing with such incidents in order to avoid the spread of false news and manipulation of public opinion. Mr. Antonious stressed that Cyprus is a target due to its EU Presidency and that it is important to address hybrid threats with responsibility and discretion. The police investigation is ongoing and is expected to shed light on the circumstances of the video's leak and editing.
