US Warns Iraq Over Future Relations with Iran

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Iraq against any rapprochement with Iran, as Nouri al-Maliki, supported by Shia parties close to Tehran, is expected to return to power. This warning came during a phone call with outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. Rubio emphasized that a government controlled by Iran would not be able to serve Iraq's interests and keep the country out of regional conflicts. The US maintains significant control over Iraq's oil revenues, based on an agreement signed in 2003, giving it leverage. Sudani has shown a friendly attitude towards the US, limiting attacks by Iranian-backed Shia armed groups.
