How British Bases in Cyprus Could Pave the Way for Trump's Greenland Ambitions

Former US President Donald Trump has expressed interest in purchasing Greenland, proposing a deal with NATO. Western officials compare the idea to the British Bases in Cyprus, a 60-year agreement allowing Britain to maintain sovereign military bases on the island. These bases, known as Sovereign Base Areas (S.B.A.s), are British overseas territories with full British sovereignty, differing from typical US military bases and governed by British law. International Relations professors note that a similar arrangement in Greenland could offer the US a permanent presence, control of the region, and access to its natural resources, without the costly and complex governance issues that would come with full ownership of the island. The Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has stated that sovereignty is a “red line” and does not support ceding sovereignty to the US.
