How the US Allowed Damascus to Sweep Kurdish Areas - Kurds Speak of Betrayal

The rapid recapture of territories in Syria by the Assad government, which had been under the control of the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), was triggered by a series of high-level meetings in Damascus, Paris and Iraq. According to sources who spoke to Reuters, the US did not obstruct the operation, which changed the balance of power in Syria to the detriment of the SDF. These meetings paved the way for the Syrian president to achieve two goals: uniting all Syrian territories under one leadership and becoming the preferred interlocutor of the US government. The attack effectively dissolved the autonomous zone that Kurdish authorities had hoped to maintain in northeastern Syria. US envoy Tom Barrack said Washington can now work with the Syrian state and has no interest in maintaining a separate role for the SDF. Syria had proposed the attack for weeks, after the deadline for the integration of the SDF into Damascus expired without significant progress. According to sources, the US had supported the SDF since 2015 to drive out the Islamic State, but did not intervene in the recent operation. The Kurds view this as a betrayal, as Washington abandoned a key ally in the region.
