Russian Ambassador: Cypriot EU Presidency Could Pave Way for New Approach with Moscow

The Russian Ambassador to Cyprus expressed confidence that the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU could lead to a new, more realistic and responsible approach by the EU towards Russia. Ambassador Ziazikov stated that Nicosia has the leverage to contribute to shaping a more constructive relationship between Brussels and Moscow, urging the EU to restart dialogue with Russia and to view global developments from a fresh perspective. He emphasized the need to recognize new geopolitical realities and the emergence of new centers of influence. The Ambassador criticized the EU's reluctance to move away from "illusions of dominance" and highlighted that Europe has the opportunity to participate in resolving the Ukrainian crisis, something Brussels is not yet pursuing, according to him. He expressed regret that US actions have not yet served as an example for the EU. Mr. Ziazikov mentioned that millions of Europeans are expecting Brussels to reconsider its approach to the crisis, and that Cyprus, due to its historical friendship with Russia and shared cultural values, can play a significant role in this process. This friendship, according to Mr. Ziazikov, will help Cyprus persuade its European partners to follow a more realistic and responsible path. Overall, the Russian Ambassador's statement underscores Russia's desire for a renewed dialogue with the EU, based on mutual understanding and recognition of new geopolitical data, with Cyprus seen as a potential catalyst for this change.
