Cyprus Attorney General: Parliament to Decide on Accountability Issue

The Attorney General of the Republic, George Savvides, stated that the final decision regarding the regulation of the issue of the Attorney General's unaccountability rests with the House of Representatives. Discussions on the matter are ongoing without a definitive outcome. Mr. Savvides emphasized that the Legal Service has presented its position and that Parliament must decide whether to proceed with discussing the bill for oversight independently of the separation of the Attorney General's Office or to put all related bills to a vote clause by clause. Constitutional reservations exist regarding the separation of the Office, while the Supreme Court has expressed concerns about the increased workload that would result.
