Flu Surge in Cyprus – Further Increase Expected in Coming Days

Cyprus is experiencing a significant surge in influenza cases, with increased hospitalizations among adults and children. Experts anticipate a further rise in infections in the coming days, as the flu has appeared earlier than expected and is highly contagious. The elderly are the primary population group affected. The Spokesperson of the Cyprus Public Health Insurance Organization (OKYPY), Charalambos Charilaou, recommended that individuals exhibiting symptoms self-isolate and avoid contact with vulnerable individuals. He emphasized the importance of prevention to protect the most susceptible members of society. Pediatrician Panagiotis Yiagkou stated that half of the children presenting with fever have influenza type A, while other winter viruses, such as RSV, tonsillitis, and gastroenteritis, are also being recorded. The simultaneous occurrence of multiple viruses is straining the healthcare system. Experts suggest influenza testing, strict adherence to hygiene measures, adequate ventilation of spaces, isolation of the sick, and the use of separate toilets where possible to limit the spread of the virus within households. The situation in hospitals remains critical due to high occupancy rates.
