Responsibilities for Human Trafficking Move to Ministry of Justice

Responsibilities for human trafficking are being transferred from the Deputy Ministry of Migration to the Ministry of Justice, following the unanimous vote of two bills proposed by DISY MP Rita Theodorou Souperman in the Plenary Session of the Parliament. Ms. Souperman emphasized that the Deputy Ministry of Migration recently admitted that it cannot effectively manage such issues, which should be treated as crimes and not as migration problems. The transfer of responsibilities was deemed necessary for the proper handling of the crime of human trafficking and the taking of effective measures to combat it. Ms. Souperman stated that the proposal was made in cooperation with the Deputy Ministry of Migration and a smooth transition will take place. Other MPs, such as Irene Charalambidou and Alexandra Attalidou, supported the proposal, emphasizing that human trafficking is a serious crime that requires specialized handling. The President of the Parliament, Annita Dimitriou, welcomed Ms. Souperman's initiative and the unanimous vote of the bills. The transfer of responsibilities is expected to contribute to better protection of victims of human trafficking and more effective combating of this crime.
