Appeal Rejected in Case of Groomer Sexually Abusing 12-Year-Old

The Cypriot Court of Appeal has rejected the appeal of a groomer convicted of a series of serious offenses, including sexually coercing a 12-year-old child. The groomer was found guilty of 17 charges, including compelling a minor to engage in illegal acts, producing and distributing child pornography, and inciting the minor to view illegal material. According to the decision, the offenses took place between 2017 and 2020, with the victim being forced into sexual acts with a woman with intellectual disabilities and participating in pornographic performances that were videotaped. Additionally, the groomer possessed and distributed child pornography via his mobile phone and the WhatsApp application. The groomer argued that the prison sentences imposed on him were excessive, citing a limited role and cooperation with the authorities. However, the Court of Appeal ruled that his role was substantial and decisive, and that there was no genuine cooperation or remorse. Instead, aggravating factors were taken into consideration. The court emphasized that sentencing is the responsibility of the trial court and that the Court of Appeal can only intervene in cases of fundamental error or manifest excess, which was not found in this case. The sentences imposed, 10 years for some charges and 12 years for others, were deemed fully justified. This case highlights the severity of crimes against minors and the need for strict punishment of perpetrators. The Court of Appeal's decision sends a strong message that such acts will not be tolerated and that the protection of children is a top priority.
