Payments Continue to Farmers Affected by Foot-and-Mouth Disease

The Veterinary Services announced that payments continue to farmers affected by foot-and-mouth disease. The payments cover loss of income and destruction of materials, and are made gradually as the culling of animals is completed. The process is monitored by the Special Advisory Committee, with the participation of representatives of agricultural organizations. The Veterinary Services emphasize that all culling is completed within 48 hours of the detection of cases, and that sampling, tracing and epidemiological investigations continue to control the disease. Information on payments is available on the website footandmouth.gov.cy. In addition, concerns were raised regarding an incident involving a Game Fund employee who inhaled disinfectant during spraying. The Veterinary Services assure that all necessary protective equipment is provided and clear instructions have been given for the use of disinfectants, while checks are carried out to ensure correct procedures are followed. The health of workers is a priority, and where problems are identified, immediate repeat instructions are given to avoid similar incidents in the future.
