Permanent Interministerial Committee Established by Cyprus and Greece – Focus on Cypriot Coast Guard

The Ministers of Justice of Cyprus and Greece, Kostas Fytiris and Giorgos Floridis, decided to establish a permanent interministerial committee to systematically monitor and implement agreed-upon measures in the field of justice. During their meeting in Athens, they exchanged views on various issues, and Mr. Floridis informed the Cypriot Minister about the reforms in the Greek justice system, with an emphasis on faster administration of justice. A significant part of the discussions focused on the creation of a Cypriot Coast Guard, with the transfer of expertise and training of personnel from Greece and the Hellenic Coast Guard. The possibility of concluding a comprehensive memorandum of cooperation for the monitoring of maritime zones, the fight against smuggling and drug trafficking, and the tackling of organized crime at sea was also discussed. Furthermore, Mr. Fytiris met with the Greek Ministers of Shipping, Protection, and Social Cohesion, discussing issues of common interest such as illegal migration and border security. The importance of cooperation through European and international organizations, such as Frontex, Europol, and Interpol, was highlighted. It was agreed to hold regular meetings of the interministerial committee every six months and to allocate positions at the Hellenic Police Officers' Academy for members of the Cypriot Police, with the aim of strengthening training and interoperability. The Greek side expressed its support for the reorganization of the Cypriot Police and the creation of the Organized Crime Unit.
