Attorney General Reasserts Reservations Regarding Separation of Powers Bill

Attorney General George Savvides reiterated his serious reservations before the Parliamentary Control Committee regarding the bill on judicial review of the Attorney General's decisions not to prosecute or to suspend a prosecution. During the session, the provisions of the government bill and the alternative bill proposed by MP Christiana Erotokritou were presented. Mr. Savvides stressed that the government bill has been extensively processed, but still has serious problems. He proposed that the issue be regulated within the existing framework of the Law Office, requiring significant amendments to the bill. Members of the Committee, such as Protocol Officer Andreas Tserkezos and President of the Pan Cypriot Bar Association Michalis Vorkas, expressed fears of overloading the judicial system and disagreed with burdening the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal. MP Andreas Passiourtidis of AKEL supported the institutional role of the Supreme Court in controlling the Attorney General, while Committee Chairman Nikos Tornaritis stated that the Committee would not promote a bill for which they are not sure is constitutionally correct.
