At least 11 people were killed and 12 injured in an armed attack at a football stadium in the city of Salamanca, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. The attack took place on Sunday, and authorities are conducting an operation to locate and arrest the perpetrators. Ten of the victims died at the scene, while one died while receiving medical attention. Simultaneously, in the same city, four bags containing human remains were found the previous night. Guanajuato is a significant industrial center, known for its automobile assembly plants and tourist attractions. However, the area is plagued by violence caused by organized crime gangs, who clash for control of drug trafficking and stolen fuel. This particular attack comes at a time of increased concern for security in Mexico. The new government, under Claudia Sheinbaum, had assured that the number of homicides in the country had fallen in 2024 to its lowest level in the last decade, however incidents like this highlight the continuing challenge of cartel violence. Authorities have not yet released information regarding the motives of the perpetrators or their identity. The investigation is ongoing and is expected to shed light on the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
