Supreme Court Increases Compensation for Soldier Injured in Mari Blast

The Supreme Court has increased the compensation amount for a soldier injured during the explosion at the 'Evangelos Florakis' naval base on July 11, 2011. The decision came after an appeal by the Attorney General, challenging the initial ruling of the District Court. The Supreme Court decided to raise the general damages from €80,000 to €90,000, including the loss of future earnings, estimated at €50,000. The Mari explosion was a tragic day for Cyprus, causing extensive damage, deaths, and injuries. The soldier, then 19 years old, suffered permanent hearing damage and tinnitus in both ears, affecting his ability to work as a plumber and car mechanic. The District Court had initially awarded €80,000 for general damages and €168.79 for special damages, as well as court costs. However, neither side was satisfied with the decision, leading to an appeal by the Attorney General and a counter-appeal by the soldier. Considering the soldier's age, the permanent hearing impairment, and his inability to pursue his profession, the Supreme Court deemed the increase in compensation justified. This decision acknowledges the severity of the soldier's injuries and the need for fair compensation.
