Greek-Affiliated Tankers Targeted by Drones in the Black Sea

Three tankers with Greek interests were reportedly hit by drones off Novorossiysk in the Black Sea while anchored and awaiting loading of crude oil. According to Diaplous, the ships believed to be involved are the MT MATILDA, MT DELTA HARMONY, and MT DELTA SUPREME. The MT MATILDA sustained damage, while a fire broke out on the MT DELTA HARMONY but was quickly extinguished. The extent of the damage to the MT DELTA SUPREME remains unknown. Information regarding the type of drones used and the extent of the damage is limited. It is unclear whether aerial UAVs, surface USVs, or a combination of both were employed. The attack occurred during a period of increased instability in the energy market, as oil production in Kazakhstan has declined and there are difficulties in transportation via Russian infrastructure. Shipping agents warn that similar incidents could lead to an increase in freight rates and insurance premiums for ships loading at Russian terminals. The region handles over 2% of the world's crude oil production, making it particularly important for global energy security. This situation creates a new challenge for shipping and energy security in the Black Sea, indicating a potential escalation of attacks and an increased need for protection of ships and infrastructure.
