Germany: Two Teenagers Killed in New Year's Eve Fireworks Accidents

Two 18-year-olds lost their lives in Germany on New Year's Eve due to injuries sustained from fireworks. The two incidents occurred in different areas of Bielefeld, with one teenager dying immediately and the other succumbing to his injuries in hospital. Furthermore, a 14-year-old lost his hand in Rentedich from a firework explosion, while in Berlin five people were injured, two seriously. In Leipzig, a 16-year-old lost two fingers while attempting to light homemade fireworks. The use of fireworks is legal only on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day in Germany, but injuries are common, especially from illegal and homemade fireworks. Data shows that hospital admissions due to fireworks are significantly higher during the New Year period compared to other times. Experts are calling for a ban on the sale of fireworks.
