Water Reservoirs “Cleio” and “Erató” Inaugurated with a Capacity of 17,200 Cubic Meters

The new water reservoirs “Cleio” and “Erató” were inaugurated in Nicosia, with a total capacity of 17,200 cubic meters. The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that the goal is to achieve water security in the country, mentioning plans for the implementation of water projects worth over 200 million euros for the period 2024-2030. President Christodoulides emphasized the need to develop water awareness, as Cyprus has one of the highest water consumption rates in the EU, with some areas exceeding 500 liters per person daily. The new reservoirs increase Nicosia's water adequacy for more than 36 hours in case of water supply disruption. The President mentioned that Cyprus is particularly affected by the climate crisis, with rising temperatures and a decrease in rainfall of 10-15% compared to the 20th century. The 2024-2025 hydrological year is expected to be one of the driest since 1902. The government aims to increase the available amount of water through non-conventional sources, improve storage and transport infrastructure, and reduce demand. The issue of water has been included in the central priorities of the Cypriot Presidency in the EU.
