Underfunding and Poor Infrastructure Endanger Patients and Staff

Athos Georgiou, head of the health sector of AKEL, reported that the 4 clinics of Athalassa Hospital and the administrative offices are at risk of collapse at any moment, endangering the lives of patients and staff. He described the hospital as unsuitable, with only 50 of the 150 beds being safe, and called on the Minister of Health to take immediate action. He also reported a reduction in services, underfunding, lack of staff and training, and the failure to start the second phase of the upgrade. Mr. Georgiou accused the OKYPY of degrading public addiction treatment facilities, citing THEMEA Lefkosia as an example, which operates with only 6 beds out of the 20 planned. He also expressed concern about the composition of the new Board of Directors of the Cyprus Addiction Treatment Authority, arguing that members do not have specialized knowledge of drugs and that there are uninvestigated allegations against the Authority's president.
