“Wolf Moon”: When to See the First Full Moon of 2026 and Why It’s Called That

The first full moon of 2026, also known as the “Wolf Moon,” will illuminate the night sky on January 3rd. The phenomenon is expected to be impressive, although the next opportunity to see such a large and bright moon will be in November. 2026 will be a rare year with 13 full moons instead of the usual 12, as there will be two full moons in May. The name “supermoon” is given when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth (perigee) during a full moon, making it appear larger and brighter. The name “Wolf Moon” comes from ancient traditions, where the January full moon coincided with the most difficult period of winter and the howls of wolves were often heard.
