Cyprus Justice Minister Addresses Recent Shooting Incident

The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Fytiris, addressed a serious shooting incident that occurred in Larnaca, emphasizing the increasing audacity of crime and the need to combat it decisively. The government is determined to tackle both organized crime and other illegal activities, however, Mr. Fytiris acknowledged that the police do not have all the necessary resources and called on Parliament to assist in providing them. Furthermore, the Minister appealed to citizens to report any information, even anonymously, in order to strengthen cooperation between the state, Parliament, and society in the fight against crime. He expressed his belief that the incident in Larnaca is related to organized crime and rivalries between factions. Regarding the policing plan in Larnaca, Mr. Fytiris stated that there is a broader plan to strengthen the police force in all cities, which will be implemented gradually in the coming months, either with permanent staff or auxiliary personnel. This process is not simple, but the government is determined to move forward with it. Finally, in response to a question about a possible connection between the incident and protection rackets, the Minister replied that all possibilities are being investigated and that the police are already in the process of making arrests, based on the evidence they have collected. He stressed that the police are also investigating the involvement of individuals with a known criminal history.
