In an interview with German ZDF, President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized that the Cyprus issue is not a “frozen conflict,” but a dangerous situation for all residents of the island. He stressed that the reunification of Cyprus could offer significant opportunities for everyone. President Christodoulides referred to the need to strengthen the EU's strategic autonomy in areas such as competitiveness, defense, energy, and migration, pointing out the EU's dependence on the US, China, and Russia. Regarding foreign policy, President Christodoulides stated that Cyprus desires a rapprochement with Turkey, but only if Turkey meets the criteria set by the EU. He also mentioned the need for the EU to approach the countries of the Middle East, India, and the Gulf countries. During the interview, President Christodoulides also referred to the daily problems of EU citizens, such as housing costs and the exposure of young people to new technologies, emphasizing the need to address them during the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU.
