Higher Minimum Wage in Northern Cyprus Compared to Republic of Cyprus

The committee in Northern Cyprus has set the minimum wage for the first half of 2026 at 60,618 TL gross (approximately €1,237) and 52,738 TL net (approximately €10,762). This means the minimum wage in Northern Cyprus is €149 higher than in the Republic of Cyprus, which stands at €1,088 gross from January 1, 2026. Trade unions in Northern Cyprus have announced they will appeal the decision, considering the increase insufficient. The "Minister of Labour", Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu, stated that a support of 12,000 TL (€245) will be provided only to those earning the minimum wage, with half of the amount paid in advance. This support will only apply to "citizens of the TRNC" whose insurance contributions are based on the minimum wage. The aim is to cover the minimum wage increase from 18.39% to 22.90% and protect workers from economic hardship. Ahmet Serdaroğlu, President of Hür-İş, described the increase as a "ridiculously low percentage" and pledged resistance, accusing the "government" of having no interest in cooperating with workers and acting against the principle of equality.
