12-Year Sentence Upheld for Man Who Sexually Abused 13-Year-Old

An appeal by a man convicted of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl has failed, resulting in his 12-year prison sentence remaining in place. The man had been convicted by the Limassol Criminal Court on six counts of child sexual abuse, with the offenses taking place between 2020 and 2021, and in three of them, the minor was under the age of 13. The convicted man challenged the credibility of the minor's testimony, argued that the police investigation was flawed, and that his right to a fair trial was violated. However, the Court of Appeal rejected his claims, ruling that the trial court had rightly accepted the minor's testimony as credible, taking into account her age, cultural background, and the feelings of fear and shame she described. The abuse took place on the veranda and in the bedroom of the minor's home, during the absence of other family members. The court noted that the minor, despite difficulties in describing and timing the events, gave a clear and coherent account of what happened. The case highlights the seriousness of child sexual abuse offenses and the need to protect vulnerable groups, as well as the strict punishment of perpetrators.
