65,000 Cattle Vaccinated in Northern Cyprus Against Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Published January 5, 2026, 13:28

The first dose of vaccination has been completed for approximately 65,000 cattle in Northern Cyprus, as part of an effort to contain the foot-and-mouth disease, which was detected in a livestock unit in December. The Turkish Cypriot 'veterinarians' association' announced that the second dose will be administered in 21-30 days and that vaccinating sheep and goats is essential to prevent the spread of the virus. Simultaneously, there are complaints about the inadequate implementation of disinfection measures and concerns about the import of agricultural vehicles and equipment from Turkey, where the disease is experiencing an outbreak. Veterinarians are calling for strict controls and considering the possibility of restricting commercial activities.
