773,180 Traffic Violations Recorded in Four Years – Half of Fines Paid, Hundreds of Thousands Outstanding

Over the past four years, 773,180 traffic violations have been recorded by traffic cameras in Cyprus. However, only half of the fines have been paid, leaving 366,196 violations outstanding. There has been a noticeable increase in violations, reaching almost 270,000 this year, suggesting that drivers have not changed their behavior. The Police acknowledge gaps and weaknesses in the delivery of fines and are promoting the installation of software to check outstanding violations, including those committed by drivers crossing into the occupied territories. Despite an initial reduction in fatal road accidents, there has been an increase in deaths in the last two years, attributed to drivers becoming familiar with the system and other factors. Most violations concern speeding, while stationary cameras primarily record red-light violations.
