A Cypriot Artistic Creation Honoring Local Folklore

The new book by Cypriot artist Champi Tsangaris, "Kallikantzari Skalapountaroi tis Kypros" (Kallikantzari Scalawags of Cyprus), is a compilation of his previous works on kallikantzari, which were awarded State Prizes. The work is an ethnographic study and an artistic creation that presents nine stories of kallikantzari in the Cypriot dialect, with translations in Greek and English. The editing of the work was done by Niki Papaxenofontos, who tried to maintain the authenticity and beauty of the Cypriot dialect in the translations. The English translation was done by Magdalina Zira, with an emphasis on the light and playful language that suits the kallikantzari. The book examines the tradition of kallikantzari as a remnant of ancient rituals and myths, which speak to the collective unconscious and the metaphysical element.
