Middle East Conflict Impacts Potato Exports

Potato farmers in Cyprus are facing consequences from the conflict in the Middle East, manifested as increased export costs and delays. Andreas Karyos, a representative of the potato farmers, stated that increased shipping costs are affecting profitability, while delays threaten the supply of Cypriot potatoes to European supermarkets, which have specific preference programs for the product. Additionally, heavy rainfall has caused problems with the uprooting of early crops, resulting in the production of small potatoes that have lower demand in the market. Strong winds and sea salt have also caused damage to potato fields.
