AEK in Varga Mode, Also Looking for Midfielder

Published January 3, 2026, 08:30

AEK is in the final stages of securing the transfer of Hungarian forward Barnabas Varga, a deal expected to be completed tomorrow and will cost over 4 million euros. Varga is expected in Athens on Sunday to sign a contract worth 1.5 million euros per year, a significant increase compared to his earnings at Ferencvaros. The acquisition of Varga represents a financial stretch for AEK, given the high cost of the transfer and the player's substantial wages. However, the club's management managed to convince the Hungarian ace to choose AEK, despite interest from other clubs from America, Asia, and major European leagues. Varga is expected to significantly strengthen AEK's attacking line, creating a strong partnership with Luca Jovic. The addition is considered crucial for the team's progress in the second half of the season, as it offers additional options for the coach. Alongside the completion of Varga's transfer, AEK has prioritized strengthening the midfield. The club's technical director, Ribalta, is looking for a midfielder with specific characteristics, who can provide solutions in both defense and attack, complementing Pineda and Marin. The management aims to complete this transfer within the next ten days.
