Akamas Roads Turn into Lakes After Rainfall, Highlighting Network Issues

Recent heavy rainfall has rendered the roads of Akamas impassable, highlighting the long-standing problems with the area's road network. The situation worsened after the suspension of improvement works in December 2023, due to environmental disagreements. Vehicles, even those with four-wheel drive, have been stranded on the flooded roads, creating access issues to the region. The government assures that it is in the final stages of restarting the projects, aiming to complete the first phase by 2027. Particular emphasis will be placed on environmental protection and compliance with environmental terms, as these were the points of contention that led to the previous suspension. The total cost of the projects amounts to €16.5 million and is funded by the European “THALIA 2021–2027” program. The works began in September 2022, but their interruption has left the road network in poor condition, exacerbated by weather conditions. The need for immediate intervention is imperative, as the Akamas region heavily relies on the road network for access for residents, tourists, and businesses. Restarting the projects and improving infrastructure are considered crucial for the area's development.
