AKEL and Peace Council Protest in Support of Venezuela Outside US Embassy

Members of AKEL and the Pan-Cypriot Peace Council held a protest outside the US Embassy in Nicosia, expressing their solidarity with the people of Venezuela. The demonstration, which took place under strict security measures, focused on condemning the US military intervention in Venezuela and the “kidnapping” of President Nicolás Maduro. Protesters held banners with slogans such as “We defend International Law and the Sovereignty of Peoples” and “Hands off Venezuela,” while chanting slogans against imperialism and in support of Cyprus and Venezuela. The President of the Pan-Cypriot Peace Council, Tasos Kosteas, denounced the US intervention as a violation of international law and warned of the dangerous precedents it creates. Mr. Kosteas emphasized that the US has a history of interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, citing Cyprus and the 1974 coup as an example. Academic Giorgos Charalambous stressed that Maduro’s “kidnapping” is a challenge to international law and creates insecurity for all states, especially small ones like Cyprus. The demonstration is an expression of the strong opposition of AKEL and the Pan-Cypriot Peace Council to US foreign policy and their support for the self-determination of peoples and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
